The Heerenveen 2011-12 Athena Anniversary Away Shirt as worn by players such as Dost, Narsingh and Duricic and Williams as the team finished 8th in the Eredivisie.

In the run-up to the new season, Heerenveen came up with an interesting campaign to present their new away shirt. The first game of the 2011-12 season was a home match against Ajax, where an orchestra presented a ceremony celebrating traditional clothing of the 1920s. This included the Heerenveen coach and players sporting the traditional attire as well as wearing fake moustaches common during the 1920s.

It soon became clear on various forums that the new Away Shirt would have a strong resemblance to the current home shirt of rivals Ajax. Many fans had a hard time with this, despite the fact that Heerenveen played in similar colours to Ajax in the past.

After many protests from fans and even Ajax threatening a lawsuit, the management finally decided not to continue with this away shirt and promptly switched to a different design.
