In 1971, the Lions got it right. The team led by John Dawes, managed by Doug Smith and coached by Carwyn James, became the first Lions to win a series in New Zealand in almost three-quarters of a century of trying.

Three years after beating New Zealand, the Lions faced arguably an even tougher assignment in attempting to become the first side of the 20th Century to win a four-Test series in South Africa. The tour was very seccessful, with the Lions winning the first 21 matches but it seems their luck ran out in the last game - tge fourth and final test against South Africa. After winning the first three test matches, the Lions were drawing 13-13 in the final test when the South African referee blew the final whistle four minutes early with the Lions two metres from the South African try line. Although they left unbeatem, they were denied a tour whitewash.
